Moving On With Education Leeds
Innovate Educate has worked with Education Leeds for several years on a project to study the impact that moving from primary to high school has on students, and also to develop ways to improve achievements at Key Stage 3.
Called Moving On, the project was a joint venture between the Inner West Achievement Zone, the Learning Mentor strand of Excellence in Cities (EiC) and the Leeds West City Learning Centre, with Innovate Educate being invited to join the management team.
As Moving On progressed, many other individuals and organisations became involved, including school staff and pupils, other EiC strands, statutory bodies such as the police and commercial organisations.
Innovate Educate's research spanned a number of years and including liaison with a wide range of parties, including learning mentors, transition assistants, nurses and community liaison officers, as well as teachers and students in both primary and high schools.
Good practice established
The main concerns for both children and staff were identified and details of the variety of approaches taken by schools during the transition period were collated. This information was then used to provide schools and teachers with many examples of good practice.
The work goes on
Work on this project is constantly evolving, with IE redesigning the Moving On website this year to make it easier to navigate. We are also working with Viewpoint to assess the impact of moving from primary to high school on sample set of students.

Supporting new BTEC qualifications
IE has also been asked to provide support for a range of BTEC qualifications to be introduced across Leeds. So far, we have worked on level 2 BTEC qualifications in retail and art and design, providing case studies, talks, interviews, video clips and advice and guidance for the businesses that have kindly agreed to participate.
