Step
Up To Travel Safely
Making the transition from primary to secondary school
can be a challenging time for children, with lots of
new things to think about and learn. West Yorkshire Transport
Executive wanted to provide help at this time and, following
a competitive tender, chose Innovate Educate to produce
a CD-Rom resource and teachers’ notes.
Called Step Up, the resource focuses on travel safety
messages for 10 year olds and involves three main areas:
- Planning
and preparing for journeys
- Staying safe on the
journey
- Transport choices.
Schools use the resource’s core activities in
the summer term, either during a single day or over
a series of shorter sessions. Step Up also offers spin
off ideas for teachers to stimulate further work.
Designed to appeal to different learning styles and
abilities, the activities are varied and include:
- Computer-based activities, including web access
- Worksheets
- Map work
- Stimulus for creative work, including
drama, dance, music and writing
- Games, challenges
and puzzles
- A simple competition that synthesises
the three elements of the resource.
As well as Innovate Educate’s extensive knowledge
in producing safety materials for children, Step Up’s
success can also be attributed to IE’s extensive
research into the transition issues faced by pupils
making the step from primary to high school. Click here to go back to News Headlines
