Getting
Out There for CABE Education
Learning in the built environment is an exciting area
offering a wealth of opportunities for young people.
Innovate Educate was delighted, therefore, to win a competitive
tender to produce CABE's (Commission for Architecture and
the Built Environment) Getting Out There web
resource to encourage and support such educational trips.
An enquiry into education outside the classroom by
the government's Education and Skills Select committee
recognised a "compelling argument
for the educational value of the built environment".
Teachers of Key Stages 3 & 4
across England support this, expressing the value of
teaching focused on the built environment and direct
experience through visits.
This kind of learning can provide young people with
a context for their community and a personal local
history, proving that history isn’t
just about Kings and Queens. It can also bring a wide
variety of subjects to life.
When producing Getting Out There, CABE asked Innovate
Educate to focus on incorporating art and design, design
technology, citizenship, geography and history. The
resulting website is a comprehensive, inspirational
resource centre. It provides case studies (ranging from a residential trip to Holy Island off
the North East Coast to creating a fourth Grace for
Liverpool) plus curriculum-focused resources, resource
reviews, useful documents, training courses and venue information in
an engaging, easy to navigate format.
