Aim

The aim of this lesson is to allow students to observe the urban design qualities (introduced in previous sessions) in their local environment or in a case study of the Westgate Shopping Centre, Oxford.

To introduce the students to a specific development site and the history, planning, design and development processes relating to the site.

To help students consider development potential against the urban design qualities they learned about in previous sessions.

Students engage in group work, information gathering, and photographic activities.

Students use observational and analytical skills.

Students answer questions designed to evaluate a site and its surroundings in the light of desirable urban design qualities.

Students make a photographic survey of a site and its surroundings.

Students collect background information and make a plan for a final presentation or report.
